This is a brief overview of the professional background of the students, projects in their academic degrees and the project to develop in this course.
María Menchu Maldonado
María Elena is from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. She got her degree in Civil Engineering at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, her Master’s degree in the University of Granada, Spain, and now she is a PhD student in Hydrosystem Engineering at Arizona State University. For this course she is in the Remote Sensing Team to compare evapotranspiration rates of five different crops between the Yaqui Valley and Arizona. Lidia Benítez Valenzuela
Lidia is from Cd. Obregón Sonora, México. Currently, she is an undergraduate student at Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora (ITSON). Her master’s thesis project is about the interaction between the surface and the atmosphere; she’s trying to understand how land and sea breezes processes influence the development of the planetary boundary layer in a coastal zone in the Gulf of California. Lidia has learned immensely during the course and is excited to disseminate the result of the team project of Vulnerability in the Yaqui Valley. Oscar Parra Cámara
Oscar is from Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, México and got his undergraduate degree in Environmental Science Engineering at the Institute Technological of Sonora. He is studying a Master’s degree in Natural Resources Science at Institute Technological of Sonora. His master's project focuses on designing and configuring sap flow sensors on a specific variety of wheat in the Yaqui Valley to obtain data on daytime and nighttime transpiration rates. For this course he is in the Nitrogen Team to develop a project focused on creating a system dynamic model to simulate the fertilization doses from farmers in the Yaqui Valley. José Tolano Camargo
José is from Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, graduated as an engineer in geosciences with a specialty in mine geology from the Superior Technological Institute of Cajeme. He is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Natural Resources at the Technological Institute of Sonora. The master's project is based on the estimation of urban heat islands within the city of Obregon in order to identify the most vulnerable areas of the city and thus be able to give rise to future projects that help mitigate or reduce the effects. For this course he is working on the remote sensing project to estimate the amount of water used. María Ávila Mascareño
María is from Ciudad Obregón, Mexico and studied an Engineering degree in Environmental Sciences at the Instituto Tecnológico de Sonora, where she is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Natural Resources Sciences. His research project seeks to determine the water use efficiency (WUE) by the wheat crop in the Yaqui Valley, through the implementation of isotopic techniques to partition the evapotranspiration. The WUE is also evaluated with the addition of a native bacterial consortium that increase plant root elongation and therefore the water and nutrients uptake. In this course she is working on the Nitrogen team, developing a dynamic system model aimed to the Yaqui Valley farmers for them to simulate their fertilization practices and the environmental outputs produced by different nitrogen doses. Francisco is from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. He studied environmental sciences engineering at Instituto Tecnologico de Sonora. He is now studing his master's degree at the same university where he is developing a project about calibrating and using a cosmic-ray neutron sensor to estimate soil moisture through the wheat cycle at the Yaqui Valley. For this course he's working in a project to estimate evapotranspiration in agricultural areas with the use of remote sensors. Luisa Orci Fernandez
My name is Luisa Orci, I'm from Magdalena de Kino, Sonora. I have a bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Sonora. I've worked in the past in the area of Atmospheric Sciences and climate. Currently, I'm a first year master studen at ASU. I'm working under Enrique Vivoni and doing research in hydrological modeling. I'm happy to have the opportunity to work on this project between ASU and ITSON. Sara Alonso Vicario
My name is Sara Alonso, and I am from Spain. I am a first-year PhD student at the Hydrosystems department at ASU. My background is in Civil Engineering (with major in Hydrology), and I have earned a MSc in Flood Risk Management from UNESCO-IHE in The Netherlands, a MSc in Water Science and Engineering from TU Dresden in Germany, and a MSc in Applied Statistics with R software from the University of Nebrija in Spain. My current research topic is socio-hydrology, I am analyzing which hydrological changes have taken place in 12 regions of the USA and attributing these changes to anthropogenic factors, climate variability or climate change. Alonso Haros Verdugo
My name is Alonso Haros, I'm in my 3rd semester in the Systems Engineering Ph.D. program at ASU, I'm from Mexicali, Mexico, I have a major in architecture and a Master's in Sustainable Development. My professional practice was focused on architectural projects until I started teaching for 8+ years, finally; I worked at the National Water Commission CONAGUA for two and a half years before enrolling in ASU. Therefore, my research interest is water management, irrigation, and water delivery systems. Manuela Hiche Schwarzhaupt
I am a Civil Engineering student emphasizing in sustainability and a first-year student in the 4+1 Program in Hydrosystems Engineering here at ASU. I have previous research experience working alongside Dr. Mohamed Moustaoui and the Mathematics Department investigating the urban heat island effect in Phoenix using the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). I am excited to be joining this interdisciplinary program and getting the chance to collaborate with all of you on such a pressing topic in our region. |
